I was a nurse a while ago close to Christmas
eve
I've taked to others but if you ask me, I
believe
I took care of a man whose son said he was very
ill
I took care of him and held him very close and
still
It didn't take much, just a little tender loving
care
and I would hear the man calling out for me just to
be there
I would come to be with him every chance I
could
And never did his son think he could get better or
would
Still, I found time and again a place for this man
in my heart
It was for his loving personality from the very
start
Until one day, he awoke in a very bad
state
We tried hard as we could but couldn't
resuscitate
This lonely man died that night in only an hour or
two
He spent Christmas eve with us though and whole
heartily too.
But it came to pass one day I found a letter by my
door
It had just fell of the postman's truck at quarter
till four
It was Christmas eve that day I forgot to
note
I was a nurse no more and my skills had become
remote
I opened the letter and found the name and a
check
It was the old man's son who I called by chance who
was a wreck,
He came to my house to pick up the check that I
obtained,
It was a little dirty and wet, but it didn't matter
that it was stained.
The man held out his hand and shook mine and said do
you remember me?
My dad fell ill and died this night, and you held
him from misery.
I answered back and said I was just this night a
nurse no more
But God must be saying that my nursing goes on even
evermore
and, as for your father on this Christmas
holiday,
He must be saying to you his son, this just not is
your pay,
But to both of us for being there, Merry Christmas
is in store
And, I love you both on this day, even
evermore.
