Will the 24 Month Medicare Wait Be Eliminated?
by Richard Feingold
Under current law, an individual who has been determined disabled and eligible to receive Disability Insurance benefits must wait 24 full months before becoming eligible for federal Medicare health insurance benefits to begin. Naturally, this can cause a considerable hardship on many people who have been determined unable to work by the U.S. Social Security Administration. This 24 month wait commences in the month in which the disabled individual is first eligible to receive Disability Insurance benefits. This date can vary depending upon the Disability Insurance benefits application date and the determined date of onset of disability by the Social Security Administration.
